Baptism

Baptism is an important part of each person’s faith story. It is an outward sign—a step of obedience—taken by a disciple of Jesus Christ. The word baptize comes from a Greek word meaning “to immerse” (with water). Baptism itself does not save a person. We are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, for salvation from sin and spiritual death (Eph. 2: 8-9).

  • In Scripture, baptism is:

    • A sign of our union with God through Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection. (Rom. 6: 3-4)

    • An act of obedience to Jesus’ instructions for each disciple to be baptized. (Matt. 28: 18-19)

    • A public declaration of our faith in Jesus Christ. (Rom. 10: 9-10)

    • Identification with our spiritual family, the body of Christ. (1 Cor. 12: 13)

    • A symbol of Jesus’ cleansing us from sin. (Acts 22:16)

  • We believe the practice of baptism is for every person who confesses Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, and receives through his death and resurrection forgiveness from sin and the gift of eternal life with him.

  • At New Spring Church, we wait until our children are old enough to make a conscious choice for Jesus Christ. We desire them to understand the meaning of baptism so that they may fully participate in the experience. We dedicate infants and young children, and pray for them to grow into a relationship with Christ.

  • If you have been baptized before you’ve made a personal commitment to Christ, we invite you to be baptized as a believer by your own free choice.
